Pelvic Health - Dr. Leigh Comerci, PT, DPT, MFDc, PCES

Pelvic Health is a specialized area of physical therapy where the focus is on problems related to bladder, bowel, or sexual dysfunction along with pain or discomfort in the pelvis, low back, and

hips. Although leaking, pain, and heaviness are common, you do not have to simply accept and endure those issues. I provide care for urinary incontinence, frequency and urgency, constipation,

painful intercourse, pelvic organ prolapse, and pelvic pain. I approach your pelvic floor problems through an orthopedic lens and utilize the most current, evidenced based practices in order to

treat you holistically because most pelvic floor issues are rarely caused by the pelvic floor alone.

Pregnancy and Postpartum

During pregnancy, a woman might find herself needing extra guidance on how to modify exercise and stay strong throughout her pregnancy, prepare for labor and delivery, or to reduce

the pain and discomfort that often show up during pregnancy. I provide physical therapy, wellness visits, and birth prep sessions per your individual needs and preferences. The

postpartum period is when pelvic health issues or a weakened core may cause confusion on how to return to exercise, sports, and intimacy without pain or dysfunction. It is my aim to guide you

in your healing journey which starts any time after birth whether that is at two weeks, two years or two decades.

Perimenopause and Menopause

Perimenopause and menopause are not when symptoms such as urinary incontinence, pain with intercourse, and pelvic pain should simply be ignored and endured. Unfortunately, confusion and

self-consciousness often accompany this phase which leads to silent suffering. I strive to provide education and treatments to alleviate not only physical symptoms but also to encourage

understanding, comfort and self-acceptance. By providing education and treatments focused on the pelvic floor muscles as well as whole-body muscle strength and conditioning, we can achieve

comfort, well-being and confidence during this chapter of life.

What to expect during your session

You are in control and make the decisions about what is best for you and your body. Prior to your visit, your completed intake forms will provide a better understanding of your symptoms

and overall health history. What happens during your initial evaluation will vary based on your specific complaints, history and preferences. Generally speaking, the initial assessment will be a

time for you to elaborate on your symptoms and for me to perform orthopedic movement assessments. If indicated and within your comfort zone, an internal pelvic floor assessment may

be useful to assess pelvic floor muscle strength, tone, and coordination of the pelvic floor muscles. The initial assessment will be a time for us to discuss your goals and to establish what

you want to get out of your time with me. During your sessions, we will work together to develop individualized strategies with the goal being to get you back to doing the things that you love.
